What is the correct patient education to give a patient administering oral chemotherapy at home?
submitted by brenda in Colorado Springs, CO
I have added a couple of links below that might help. Neither specifically give advice about the probable low but present risk of chemo exposure to the care givers, partners and family members. We advise the patients to sit down on the toilet when passing urine, then put the lid down and double flush the toilet. We advise the use of condomes for sexual activity. The idea being that the small amounts of chemo or its metabolites that may be present in the patients body fluids are not allowed to come in contact with others in the household.
Other advice will be obvious such as ensuring others don't handle the chemo tablets or that if they have to that appropriate gloves are worn. Keep the chemo well out of reach of children or others who might accidentally take them.
Hope this is of help.
