On our med-surg units we have inpatients receiving chemotherapy continuously X 4 days. Are universal precautions enough as protection for staff? Some say need to wear face mask, gowns, double glove, etc to dispose of urine, stool, etc.
Hi Teresa,
Iam an oncology nurse, and we wear nitrile chemo golves to dispose of waste for chemo patients during and for 7 days post chemo. A gown can be worn as well if your dumping waste if you are concerned with splash back.

I work on a med/surg floor as well, where we are caring for chemo patients more frequently. Do your facilities have some type of "isolation/caution" sign on the patient's door to inform staff of chemo precautions? Our oncology team is currently trying to develop a sign that would be HIPPA correct and not give away that a patient is on "CHEMO" precautions for the general public walking by. Any suggestions?
